Helping Your Parents

Helping Your Parents

At Shannondell, we enjoy working with multi-generations and find that families appreciate having a helpful resource of information and experience.

Adult children want to know their parents are moving to a place where they’ll not only be safe, but also inspired to remain active and socially engaged. In turn, parents want to know that family members are supportive of their decision and pleased with their chosen community.

We view our job as helping families find the right fit, regardless if this turns out to be our community. Equally important, we’re mindful not to intrude while also helping to ensure any potential move is a positive experience for everyone.

A good place to start is knowing the questions we hear most often from children of prospective residents. You’ll find these, along with our answers, below.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY ADULT CHILDREN

Click on the questions below to reveal brief answers.

What is a CCRC?
A continuing care retirement community (CCRC), also referred to as a life plan community, offers a maintenance-free lifestyle in a residential setting with a variety of provided services, all conveniently located on-site. Community amenities typically consist of numerous social activities, dining options, maintenance and housekeeping services and access to continuing care (assisted living, personal care, memory care, skilled nursing and rehab) as residents’ needs require.
Are these higher levels of care (assisted living, personal care, memory care, skilled nursing and rehab) located within the Shannondell community?
The Meadows at Shannondell provides personal care and memory care, including a full-time licensed nurse. Rehab services and skilled nursing care are provided within Rehab at Shannondell. All health care facilities are conveniently located within the Shannondell campus and all rooms are private. So, should one of your parents require a short- or longer term stay at one of our other facilities, the spouse or partner can continue to live in their independent living residence and remain close-by.
Do my parents own their residence?
No, a one-time refundable entrance fee provides lifetime use of your parents’ Shannondell residence. The entrance fee is refundable to the resident or the estate as outlined in the Residence and Care Agreement.
What do monthly fees cover?
Your parents pay a single monthly service fee that ranges based on their chosen residence. This affordable fee covers twenty meals a month, utilities, bi-weekly housekeeping, groundskeeping, maintenance, scheduled transportation, on-site educational and cultural events, activities (including aquatics and fitness), daily check-in system, 24/7 security, emergency response system and more.
Do you provide any home sale and/or moving assistance?
Yes. New residents enjoy professional home sale assistance, interior planning for their Shannondell residence and unpacking services – all complimentary. Our real estate manager will work with your parents’ real estate agent to ensure their home is marketed optimally. Our interior designers will work with your parents, helping them to prioritize furnishings, and develop a placement plan based on the layout of their chosen Shannondell home. Then, on move-in day, a professional senior moving service helps to unpack and place items. So from Day One, your parents can relax in their new home. And, as their child, you aren’t faced with handling these tiresome tasks.
Are my parents’ pets welcome?
We love well-behaved pets at Shannondell. We offer ample grounds, including an adjacent horse farm, to walk pets and even a dog run where residents can unleash their pets and let them run free with other canines.
May my parents decorate their Shannondell home as they wish?
Your parents are welcome to customize their home to reflect their own style and tastes. Our Shannondell Design Center includes staffed interior designers and abundant samples of fabrics, paint colors, window treatments, flooring, counters and more. Complementing the Design Center are adjoining model residences where your parents can quickly see the difference that design upgrades … such as cabinetry, custom lighting and moving walls … can make. Just know, for more involved interior renovations, design plans and construction are subject to approval.
Are our children (parents’ grandchildren) welcome at Shannondell?
Absolutely. Both adult children and grandchildren are a common sight at Shannondell. Grandchildren, in particular, love our aquatics center and model train room. Families are welcome to visit their parents at any time.
What happens if my parents need medical attention for illness or injury?
Two renowned health systems – Main Line Health and Einstein Healthcare Network – call Shannondell home. Both practices offer board-certified physicians specializing in internal medicine. Specialists may also include cardiology, orthopedics, podiatry and audiology. Additionally, residents enjoy access to exercise physiologists offering a variety of fitness classes and wellness nurses who support residents in sustaining good health. Your parents also benefit from having an outpatient physical therapy office, pharmacy and convenience store all on-site.
I’ve read The Club at Shannondell offers a golf course and outdoor pool. Is this part of Shannondell at Valley Forge?
The Club at Shannondell is a sister property, conveniently located just down the road from Shannondell. This public club is open to Shannondell residents and the local Audubon community. Our resident golfers find the golf course both challenging and fun, and they appreciate the club’s locker rooms, staffed pro shop and community-favorite Chadwick’s Restaurant & Bar. Seasonal memberships are also available for the swim complex offering a large outdoor pool with multiple water features, including a tower slide. Members also have access to a poolside snack stand.
What’s the best way to visit Shannondell, possibly with my parents?
