Cultivating Fresh,
Fun and Friendships
“I
“I’m thinking about
planting rutabagas
this year Nancy,
what do you think
of that? Should give
me a late summer
or early fall crop,”
says Phil as he
spreads fresh compost into his plot.

“I think you’ve been reading
too many seed catalogs over the
winter. What in the world are you
going to do with a bunch of root
veggies in September when all you
really want is a few more weeks of
vine-ripe tomatoes and cucumbers,”
answers Nancy. And so goes another
conversation between garden plot
neighbors in the Shannondell
Gardens at the start of the growing
season.

As sure as winter will give way
to spring, and spring to summer,
our residents who make up the
Shannondell Garden Club are our
first visual cue that the warm season
is just around the corner. Buckets,
spades and seed packs in hand, these
residents are easy to spot heading
out from both clubhouses toward
the field where their cherished
gardens reside.
