4 visit shannondell.com Betty: As a retired writer of garden books and articles, joining the Flower Club here and arranging bouquets for Shannondell was just a natural next step. Joe: Before coming here, I never entertained any thoughts of bird carving. The goldfinch I’m holding is the result of having a great master carver and teacher at Shannondell, who guided me step-by-step on how to use the tools and apply them to the anatomy of a bird. Alice: I took painting many years ago, mainly on metal (tin). So, yes, acrylic works on canvas is something I began in the art studio here at Shannondell. Maureen: I’ve sewn my whole life, but quilting is a more recent interest. It’s also something I share one- on-one with several Shannondell residents who have asked for my help. I’ve discussed starting a quilting group with both the Crafters and Sit-and-Stitch groups, as well as with the Shannondell staff. I think it could be another group to start small and grow over time. Greg: Since moving to Shannondell, I began doing these drawings to accompany my poems, which go further back. In 2025, the Shannondell Art Gallery exhibited 22 pairings of my art and poems. It was a first for the gallery. About three years ago, with help from the Activities department here, I started the first poetry group at Shannondell. Today, we have about 40 members, many first-time poets. Several members have told me it has changed their life. Joe: Since coming here, I’ve met so many residents from various backgrounds with distinct interests. This encouraged me to expand my own interests and skills. Tell me, where else could someone who only sang in the shower become one of the Shannondell Singers (chorus) ... or a former high school teacher find receptive audiences for his favorite lecture topics ... and students willing to join him for community Nature Walks? Indeed, Shannondell has inspired me in so many ways! Alice: Shannondell gives you a convenient and comfortable setting to pursue many interests, whether it’s painting, sculpture, writing, or other activities. For me, the nearby studios and provided supplies are most helpful. Marsha: Recently, I’ve been doing fused glass art in a small kiln. Others here have complimented me on these pieces and frequently ask me what I’m currently working on, which makes me feel good. Greg: For my wife and I, photography, golf, art, poetry, book clubs, current events and terrific friends at Shannondell have made our “Golden Years” truly golden. [ m\ We thank all of the residents who shared their talents and favored personal projects with our photographer and staff recently. As several stated, you’ll find more creative works by residents in the frequent “Artists Among Us” exhibits in the Art Gallery located in the Ashcroft Clubhouse. For those who might be planning to attend one of our upcoming guest events, you’re always welcome to stop by the Gallery either before or after your tour and lunch. You’ll be impressed, and just maybe inspired. Q Is this a new artistic pursuit, and are you sharing it with other residents? Q Aside from your craft/art, how has living at Shannondell inspired you?
