How did an American military hero 
become one of its most infamous 
traitors? Benedict Arnold was a 
complex man. As a Patriot, he 
protested unfair British taxes, 
helped capture Fort Ticonderoga, 
led an expedition to take Quebec, 
and fought with distinction at 
Saratoga. But as Philadelphia’s 
military governor, he felt betrayed 
by Congress. His love for a beautiful 
Loyalist led him to make secret 
overtures to the British — and came 
close to arranging the capture of 
George Washington at West Point.
