By Paul Weininger

In the spirit of The Ed Sullivan Show, which ran for 23 years on CBS, we’ll
be entertained by vocalists and musicians, comics and ventriloquists, and
a dance group from across the pond, all caught on classic video clips with
commentary by Paul. If you enjoyed these early variety shows, then you
won’t want to miss these fun showings in both theaters.

In 1957 the U.S. blinked with
amazement at Russia’s launch of the
Sputnik satellite, leading to warp-
speed development of America’s own
space program. This era was also
charged with momentous cultural
exchange between the two countries.
We’ll explore one such instance
by peeking (via videos) behind the
curtain of the first international
Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow
when two American musical giants,
pianist Van Cliburn and conductor
Leonard Bernstein, joined forces to
build lasting cultural bridges. In the
process, inspiring and accomplishing
scores that weren’t all entirely musical.
