Based on the 1992 Disney film and the real-life 1899 Newsboys Strike
in New York City, Harvey Fierstein adapted the screenplay for the stage,
adding new songs and a romantic subplot, telling the story of a band
of teenage “newsies” led by the charismatic Jack Kelly who strike
against unfair conditions and publishing prices. With music by
Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, the show premiered on
Broadway in 2012, earning Tony Awards for Best Score and
Choreography. Featuring now classic songs like Seize the Day and
Carrying the Banner, Newsies offers non-stop thrills and a timeless
message that Disney serves up so well. It’s a perfect summer show
for multi-generations! ($11 for residents)
