Evolution of the Blues
By Joe Becton
July 24, 2 p.m.
(Ashcroft movie theater)

A noted historian, musician and
storyteller, Mr. Becton joins us for this
special presentation that’s part musical
revue, part American history lesson.
Accompanying himself on guitar
and harmonica, he traces the styles
of music developed by Africans in
America through song. In the process,
he reveals the collision of cultures that
created the music we call gospel,
jazz and blues. From African prodigy
and fiddler Sy Gilliat to composer
and sax player John Coltrane, it’s an
entertaining walk through the birth
of the Blues.
