Yellow Springs: The First Revolutionary Military Hospital
By Sandy Momyer & Bill LaCoff
July 29, 2 p.m. (Bradford movie theater)

With more soldiers dying of disease than lost in battle, General Washington sought to
correct this by organizing a medical department and building America’s first military
hospital. By bringing in doctors to address disease, developing medicines locally and starting
a vaccination program, Washington’s efforts helped to not only stem illness, but also shape
future medical knowledge. We’ll meet Dr. Bodo Otto who managed the hospital and learn
how medicinal herbs played a part in the Valley Forge encampment. Yellow Springs helped
to keep the army healthy, in the process helping to secure our independence.
